Jay Young Esq.

Marquis & Aurbach is a business and estate planning law firm that provides the highest quality legal services to its clients. We place a high degree of emphasis on our summer clerkship program because it is our primary source of recruiting new associates. We're looking for the best and brightest to join our team. Here are some things you might like to know about us.

Our summer clerkship experience is designed to provide clerks with a “real world” experience – and one that mirrors the experience of a first year associate. Unlike some firms that use summer clerks strictly to write legal research memos to a shareholder with whom they will have very little contact, we focus on training our clerks to be the best advocate they can be by providing the opportunity to write motions, attend hearings and depositions, and even participate in trials. In other words, we'll treat you like a real attorney.

Every professional at Marquis & Aurbach is assigned a mentor. For summer clerks, this means that you will have direct and frequent contact with a shareholder or senior associate whose job it is to shepherd you through the summer. Your mentor will teach you about M&A's computer systems, the correct forms to use for various projects, and everything else from where to find supplies to what writing style works best for a particular shareholder.

We want each summer clerk to have the chance to work with each of our attorneys throughout the summer. In that way, you have the opportunity to learn from each person. You will therefore be exposed to a wide variety of subject areas, including: Real Estate, Condemnation, Employment law, Mechanics Liens, Construction, Corporate formation and disputes, Contract disputes, Tort Litigation, Bankruptcy, etc. All assignments are given in writing so that objectives and expectations are clear. Once you receive an assignment, you will work directly with the assigning attorney until the project is completed. After the project is completed, you will receive written and verbal feedback on each assignment so that your work will improve steadily.

The First Step to the Opportunity of a Lifetime:

______________

Because we hire summer clerks with the expectation that each will meet our performance expectations and therefore return to us as an associate, we concentrate our efforts on training our clerks to be effective advocates. That means that you will, when possible, write motions instead of research memos. Clerks are often asked to attend depositions, hearings, and trials. You will see that our young associates are given responsibility immediately upon graduation. Each case at M&A is assigned to a “team” of professionals, including a shareholder, associate, paralegal, and legal secretaries. This team works as one to accomplish each task. As associates show they are capable of handling responsibility, they are given more of the load in each matter, until the associate is handling the matter and the shareholder is overseeing the case. Often our young associates will go to trial in their first year out of law school. More importantly, our environment of mentoring prepares young associates for this challenge.

You are not in competition with other clerks. Rather, we expect our clerks – like all attorneys in our office – to support one another. We are hopeful that we will be making job offers to all of our clerks at the end of each summer. That is why we take so much time to mentor and provide you with the tools you will need to be an effective attorney. In order to succeed, you should work hard, accept constructive criticism and make improvement, and be yourself.

Although not a requirement, we encourage our associates to complete a one-year judicial clerkship upon graduation from law school or an externship during school. A judicial clerkship can be a fertile learning environment that will pay dividends for an entire career. Almost as important as learning how things work within the court system, judicial clerks gain instant credibility in front of all of the judges, secretaries, and other staff.

Securing a summer clerkship position at a quality law firm is generally the first step to a prosperous and rewarding career. We are looking for intelligent, hard-working candidates with congenial personalities. If you feel that you meet these qualifications, we encourage you to interview with Marquis & Aurbach.
